What is a Root Canal?

Root canals are restorative dental treatments used to remove infection from a tooth’s pulp, relieving pain and preventing the infection from spreading.

When the pulp becomes damaged or infected, it can cause pain, swelling, and a warm or throbbing sensation in the surrounding gums.

The Benefits of a Root Canal

Severe toothaches can make eating or speaking painful and may even lead to abscesses. Root canal treatment offers an effective solution to prevent more invasive procedures from being necessary, including the tooth needing to be extracted.

In many cases, your tooth can return to its normal, pain-free state shortly after the procedure.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

You may need a root canal if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Persistent or severe tooth pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums near the affected tooth
  • Darkening or discolouration of the tooth
  • A recurring pimple or abscess on the gums
  • Pain that radiates to the jaw, neck, or ear

If you notice any of these symptoms, contact our team at Heritage Dental Centre to schedule an evaluation.

The Root Canal Process

During your root canal appointment, your dentist will first create a small access hole in the top of the tooth to reach the infected pulp. Specialized files are then used to carefully remove the damaged or infected tissue and thoroughly clean and disinfect the canals.

Once the tooth has been cleaned, the canals are filled with a biocompatible material to seal them and prevent further infection. Finally, a permanent filling or crown is placed to restore the tooth’s structure and function.

Most patients experience relief from pain shortly after the procedure, and your dentist will provide instructions to help you care for the treated tooth as it heals.
